First Stills from New Matsumoto Movie Arrive

The title of the movie is "Saya (Scabbard) Samurai" and stars an acting unknown Nomi Takaaki who works at a Japanese tapas bar (izakaya) and has been on Matsumoto’s late-night variety shows "Hataraku Ossan Ningyou” and “Hataraku Ossan Gekijou“, It appears from the stills that this could be purely drama although that isn’t a guarantee as no info has been released on genre.

"Kanjuro refuses to fight, so he abandons his sword & his clan, & has bounty put on him. He and his daughter Tae embark on a nomadic journey, but they are eventually captured. His eccentric lord offers to exonerate Kanjuro if he can complete a "30-day feat." SAYA SAMURAI (or is it ZAMURAI?) set to open in June 2011"

Do you mean the stills or the youtube video? the youtube video isn’t the movie and the stills don’t show anything funny.

The youtube video was funny though air bowling into the wall lol

If you put matsumato in anything it’s destined to be a hit.

You would think that but for some reason that isn’t true, Matsumoto’s last movie Symbol only ranked 5 on it’s opening weekend and wasn’t even in the charts 4 weeks later.

Takeshi Kitano is an example of a TV heavy hitter whose movies don’t pull in great numbers, his movies aren’t hugely popular in Japan, his latest movie Outrage only got to number 4 on the Japanese box office chart, he’s better known abroad for his movies than he is domestically…I think I heard somewhere that if you ask a Japanese person who Takeshi Kitano is the majority wouldn’t know who you’re talking about as they know him as Beat Takeshi which is his TV name.

Agreed.

Also, Matsumoto’s movies seem like the type not many people see, but are critically liked like True Grit (which just came out and was really good by the way). Most people would rather see some crappy Michel Bay movie with some Megan Fox in short-shorts weaving her butt at the camera, than see something that’s acttually good. I haven’t seen any of Matsumoto’s movies, but I have read some reviews. Critics seem to like Symbol a lot. Of course I am assuming the Japanese people are similar to the Americans with their viewing habits. All I’m trying to say is flashiness sells well. I think in most cultures it does. (look at the sales Avatar got and I think it’s one of the flashiest movies ever) It might be an amazing movie, but I don’t think it will probably break record sales.

sadly critical acclaim and box office don’t always go hand in hand, in fact it seems to be separating which in my mind is odd.

Nippon Cinema has just added a 30 second teaser trailer for this

http://www.nipponcinema.com/trailers/sa ... rai-teaser

I swear I can hear Itsuji Itao’s voice in there!

I’m pretty sure it’s Itao’s voice too!

I hope it will be released in Europe as well (since "Dai-Nipponjin" made it her even with a German dub, and "Shinboru" was shown on a festival here). It looks pretty interesting, altough the story isn’t [i:7kbrum3z]that[/i:7kbrum3z] original. But I trust in Matsumoto that it will be at least interesting.

I don’t think a story has to be original as long as it’s told well and a new spin has been put on it, from the video it looks like it’s shot well…I’m hoping that it’s a serious movie instead of looking for laughs, I think he’ll surprise everyone if he does a serious movie.

Well I can’t wait to see it on the festival circuit! I’m guessing you are in Germany captainfalcon? is it Berlinale Film Festival that you’ve attended?

if so what J Movies have you seen there? (I’ll be seriously jealous if you’ve seen SORASOI there)

This is new trailer of "Saya Zamurai". Yeaah Itao is here!

Wow, I really like the look of this from the trailer! I haven’t managed to watch Symbol yet, though I did read up reviews that sparked my interest. I’m a film blogger and general filmgeek, I’m surprised at the comments that Kitano’s films are not that well known or embraced in Japan, to me he is one of Japan’s most accomplished film makers, along with the enigmatic Takashi Miike of course! I hope this film gets a screening in Australia, Symbol was shown at a festival here but I didn’t catch it. Australia sucks for film screenings and events… Thanks for the share!
