Matsumoto on the current state of television of Japan

Matsumoto was at it again yesterday on the broadcast of Wide Na Show that aired this Monday.

[hide:22vyfjwx]This time, he talked about the new drama on NTV that started airing a few weeks ago 'Ashita, Mama ga Inai' starring child actress Mana Ashida which is causing controversy for its portrayal of people in Japanese orphanages. He goes on to say that there are some people who nowadays seem to complain for the sake of it and he questions whether those people, including a hospital who apparently want the program taken down, actually want the program taken down from the bottom of their hearts and then says that they are the reason that TV is now becoming boring (at least, in his opinion). Recently, the drama has lost some sponsors because of this complaining.[/hide:22vyfjwx]

To watch the actual drama and judge for yourself whether you agree with Matsumoto, here is a general link to all the episodes: [url:22vyfjwx]http://www.gooddrama.net/japanese-drama/ashita-mama-ga-inai%E2%80%8E[/url:22vyfjwx]

That drama seems like it was asking to get out of the air. Yes, I haven’t saw that drama to make an opinion already, but judging from the text you posted, that drama would most likely get removed from the NTV programming.

[quote="andylau-fr":ubtpt6fn]I think japan and asian drama in overall are overrated. From what i saw it’s totaly impossible to have any comparison with western drama. Japan drama are totally overacted, childish, and overdramatic. I can’t watch without laugh at how bad is it from the screenplay to the acting. Korean drama are the worst. :shake:[/quote:ubtpt6fn]

Essentially every drama from every country fits that bill. That’s [i:ubtpt6fn]why[/i:ubtpt6fn] they’re called "dramas".

If you ask me, it’s Western soaps that suck the hardest. I’ve yet to find a single one that isn’t just boring cliche after cliche, layered in copious amounts of melodrama and crappy acting.

At least some Asian soaps actually break the stereotype.

I think people in Japan are more inclined to enjoy dramas because they can relate to some characters on a personal level. Whereas variety shows are just funny but they dont see much connection to it. I remember matsumoto once said in an interview that form of connection is important for a lot of Japanese viewers to get entertainment out of it in a comedic sense (when he went to America to make funny movie) and thats probably a similar effect in what gives them interest to what airs on TV.
Also, Soudou, thanks for mentioning that Hanzawa Naoki tv series, its not bad so far!
