Hot Pot/Nabe

Alright.

So I saw the recently subbed Hot Pot episode from the Absolutely Tasty series. Needless to say that I got hungry as hell while watching that.

I want to try doing an hot pot too. The timing is perfect too, because it’s very cold here these days.

I was just wondering… What do I need? Do I need a special cooking pot or whatever? Do I need any special ingredients or whatnot?

A quick Google search gives some hints…

Many Hot Pot Dishes:

The last hot pot I went to, the ingredients were:

fish balls
thinly sliced meats
shredded chicken
bean sprouts (<- recommended because they stay crunchy for a longer time when cooked than most sprouts)
shrimp
Clams/mussels
various types of tofu
various types of fish
cilantro (<- best flavour enhancement)
parsley
and that’s all I can remember right now

Also, the equipments we used were mini fire stove and a large pot.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you could try putting a few pieces of mochi in there as well. They won’t have much flavour, but they get nice and gooey. Some people like to put konyaku in there as well, but I would pass. Nori, lettuce, noodles and even gyoza could be added to Iniquiti’s list. The secret though, is the dashi - the broth. It really does make a cold day go by faster. Happy experimenting!
