The easiest solution for video problems is to download CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack) and use it with Media Player Classic Home Cinema. One installer takes care of everything and you should be able to watch all modern video releases (including Hi10p that most anime subbing groups use) without any problems.
@daveime: I don’t see how torrent client could have had anything to do with that problem. Deleting or renaming the file while seeding can’t be done, but reading (ie. watching) should work completely fine.

I suspect it was an issue with my bittorrent client and VLC arguing over the same file. I made a copy of the completed files and watched those, leaving the originals for seeding, and the problem seemed to go away.

yes, i’m also having the same problem with vlc and copying the file doesn’t work for me
That only happened to me once, but I had paused the video and went to do something else I came back and it was shut down because of an error. But never happened after that.

It’s just your player, it doesn’t seem to handle the interlacing correctly. Here’s approx. the same shot displayed correctly in MPC HC.

You’re seeing that because this is 1080i and not 1080p. The "i" means "interlace" and you’re seeing the interlacing pattern. Probably It’s more a problem with how your media player handles interlaced video than anything else. Look at your media player’s settings to see if it has any features to smooth out interlaced videos. Or try another media player like [url=http://www.videolan.org/vlc/#download:34q0dnr8]VLC[/url:34q0dnr8]. I know some people here aren’t too fond of it, but I’ve been using it without problems for years. AND it has a feature to smooth out interlaced videos.
