Question To Subbers: Video Compression and Quality

Hey~ fellow forum dwellers,

This is mainly a question for subbers but if you know anything about compressing videos/ hard subbing etc, please answer too.

If you’ve tried it before, you’ll probably know that when hard subbing, you can lose a considerable amount of the video image quality. That’s definitely the case with me, as I try not to make the video size too big, but no matter how you think about it, it’s still tooooo bad. :@

I currently use virtual dub to hard sub and it makes it the video look sort of saturated at times and just blurry…Maybe I have to twiddle with the settings a bit but I don’t really know what most things mean so have stalled in that option.

So I was wondering what other ways that you may have found that work well?

not sure if this is information you’re looking for, though i haven’t subbed my own videos, i have combined videos and .ass subs to play on my xbox. i use FileFactory and i had to do a small amount of tweaking so that the subs were’nt half the size of the screen. but once i got it dialed in, as long as i kept it in mp4 format i didn’t notice a loss in quality

What encoder are you using to handle the video compression in VirtualDub and are there any settings you typically alter from their defaults?
