Well I find them useful. My Japanese isn’t nearly good enough to keep up, so it’s helpful to have the subs, even if it’s just machine translation. I often find bad subs are more useful because they translate what is said, not what is meant - so I learn more about the language and how it’s actually used.

Just learn it tbh. I watch all the shows RAW and I’ve slowly picked up Japanese using this method. Subtitles are unnecessary.
